Anti-LGBTQ Mailers, Robocalls Featured in 2016 Campaign

While we celebrate the most pro-equality presidential ticket on the ballot this year, we also recognize several truly horrifying anti-LGBTQ mailers and homophobic and transphobic tactics that have appeared across the U.S. this election season.

What follows are some of the most egregious examples though certainly others exist. They all point to the need to not simply press on over the coming two days — as we work harder than ever to put pro-equality candidates in office — but to press on beyond Election Day.

  • HRC-endorsed Jane Campbell, a retired Navy captain who is running for North Carolina State Representative, was also targeted in a mailer. Campbell is openly lesbian and, if elected, would become the first openly LGBTQ female state representative in North Carolina. She is challenging one of the author’s of HB2 for his seat in the North Carolina General Assembly. The mailer features the headline “Run From Jane, Run!” and describes her “radical ideology” and features an exaggerated image of Jane with the words, “See Jane Run.”

  • Huffington Post reports a robocall in West Virginia is targeting openly gay Delegate Stephen Skinner, who is running for State Senate. Skinner voted against HB 4012, a so-called “religious freedom” bill that would allow businesses to discriminate against LGBTQ people. “The narrator depicts a 12-year-old girl and says she was paid by the Family Policy Council, a state group affiliated with the conservative Christian group Family Research Council. ‘I’m only 12. I’m not old enough to see a naked man,’ the narrator says. ‘I know what a girl is, and it’s not that.’”
  • According to The Daily Beast, William Johnson, a self-proclaimed white nationalist and Trump supporter, has a paid robocall calling an independent candidate, Evan McMullin, in Utah “homosexual,” and using the McMullin’s same-sex parents as a reason to not support him. Johnson then goes on to encourage voters to support Donald Trump. “Evan has two mommies. His mother is a lesbian, married to another woman. Evan is okay with that. Indeed Evan supports the Supreme Court ruling legalizing gay marriage,” Johnson says on the call. “Evan is over 40 years old and is not married and doesn’t even have a girlfriend. I believe Evan is a closet homosexual. Don’t vote for Evan McMullin. Vote for Donald Trump. He will respect all women and be a president we can all be proud of.”

HRC condemns these attacks and is proud to support and #turnOUT the vote for pro-equality candidates up and down the ballot. Learn more here.
