#AM_Equality Tip Sheet: October 14, 2016

TODAY — SCOTUS TO CONSIDER WHETHER TO HEAR CASE INVOLVING DISCRIMINATION AGAINST TRANS TEEN: Federal courts have many cases involving questions of LGBTQ equality pending before before them. Among them is G.G. v. Gloucester County School Board, a case regarding Gloucester High School in Virginia, which denied a transgender boy access to the boys’ restroom — violating Title IX. The Supreme Court of the United States could announce they will hear the case as early as this afternoon, however Monday is more likely.

  • VICE News previews the case: In a moving new piece, VICE features the plaintiff in this case, Gavin Grimm, and his fight to use the restroom that corresponds with his gender identity. Watch a clip here.

THE COMPANY TRUMP KEEPS: The Texas Observer reports that a “who’s-who” of anti-LGBTQ groups, lead by infamous Dallas homophobe Robert Jeffress, plan to rally in Houston for Donald Trump next week. A parade of anti-equality hate mongers will join Jeffress, who, the Observer reports, has been “been busy defending Donald Trump” despite his remarks condoning sexual assault. More here.

  • Speaking of Texas… On Oct. 11, The San Antonio Tribune’s editorial board strongly urged Texas lawmakers not to hurt the state by following in the anti-LGBTQ footsteps of the North Carolina General Assembly and Gov. Pat McCrory, whose discriminatory HB2 law continues to harm countless LGBTQ people and damage the state’s economy and reputation.
  • Speaking of anti-equality hate mongers… check out this Washington Post story on how Trump’s surrogates, including anti-LGBTQ extremists like The Family Research Council’s (FRC) Tony Perkins, are damaging the candidate even further.

MIC DROP OF THE WEEK: After Donald Trump’s legal team sent a letter to the New York Times threatening legal action if it failed to retract and apologize for a story detailing  more of Trump’s predatory behavior toward women, the Times delivered this epic clapback in response. The zinger? “f [Trump] believes that American citizens had no right to hear what these women had to say and that the law of this country forces us and those who would dare to criticize him to stand silent or be punished, we welcome the opportunity to have a court set him straight.”

GOP HOUSE MEMBERS SEEK TO UNDERMINE LGBTQ PROTECTIONS IN AFFORDABLE CARE ACT: Forty-five House Republicans  sent a letter to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services questioning a regulation adopted in  the implementation of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) that provides explicit protections from discrimination on the basis of gender identity and sex stereotyping in healthcare and insurance. The group is attempting to make the claim that Section 1557 of the ACA “requires virtually every private physician, healthcare provider, and health insurance plan in the country,” to go against their “best medical judgement” in treating transgender patients. Read the letter here.

HRC AND EQUALITY NC CALL ON PAT MCCRORY TO EXTEND VOTER REGISTRATION DEADLINE: Yesterday, HRC President Chad Griffin and Equality North Carolina Executive Director Chris Sgro called on North Carolina Pat McCrory to extend the state’s voter registration deadline to give all North Carolinians affected by Hurricane Matthew the opportunity to vote in the 2016 elections. The Board of Elections had previously announced the deadline would remain as today, Oct. 14.

NEW POLICY BRIEF ON GUN VIOLENCE AGAINST THE LGBTQ COMMUNITY: Yesterday, The Fenway Institute of Fenway Health released a report showing that gun violence poses a substantial threat to the health of the LGBTQ community. HRC is proud to have joined the growing movement to enact common-sense gun violence prevention measures in the United States.

CHEFS FOR EQUALITY ANNOUNCES “TASTE FOR EQUALITY” COCKTAILS: Organizers of HRC Foundation’s annual Chefs for Equality food and cocktail event announced that six D.C.-area restaurants are pledging to donate a portion of their proceeds from the month of October to the HRC Foundation, the educational arm of the nation’s largest LGBTQ civil rights organization.
